Local Area Network (LAN) is the
bread and butter of just about anything to do with anything. The Internet
itself is composed of many LAN networks which are connected by server nodes. The
military, government, businesses, schools, and the dark caves were gamers play
together all runs off of LANs. Basically, a LAN links two or more devices a
direct connection to one another. This can be done with or without a server.
For starting up businesses, a LAN can be an invaluable asset. Servers are a costly item, and business can save a lot of money at start up by waiting to buy them. Computers can be connected to an ad-hoc network, which is a LAN without a server. Not the best way to do things, but every computer in the network can access each other and save, access, or run items to a drive on any computer with permission. A printer may also be connected, enabling any computer connected to the ad-hoc to print off documents. You may also use this type of LAN to share an internet connection from your computer to all. Once a business has seemed to be successful, it is then needed to dish out the cash for a server. A server is nice for a LAN network in the fact that it features a faster CPU, increased performance RAM, and and/or larger storage capacity for hard drives, or multiple inputs for hard drives. Gamers like to use an ad-hoc for quick gaming sessions when they make their trek through the urban wilderness to their friends’ caves. WLAN is useful to connect local computers together and still have access to the internet. Our campus wireless network is known as a CAN (campus wireless network) and we can agree the name fits, considering it’s a CAN of crap.
